The 75th Anniversary of the Great Escape was Commemorated at VEMU

On Sunday, September 22, the Museum of Estonians Abroad, VEMU commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Great Escape of 1944 with the event Songs of Exile. The event was led by Andres Raudsepp. He led musical performances by Järvi Linda, Lauri Kalle, Avo Kittask, and Liina Purje-Lepik. The event also included a short presentation in the format of an interview about the Estonian translation of Dr. Jaak Jürison’s book Viimane rong Eestist and group singing.

The Story of BATUN Presented at the National Library of Lithuania

On September 12, a book The Story of BATUN—Baltic Appeal to the United Nations (1966-1991), published in 2018 by Estonian-born Sirje Okas Ains was presented at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. BATUN is the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian movement founded in the US in the late 1960s, which main goal was to seek independence for the Baltic States and their membership in the United Nations. VEMU Celebrates the Year of Estonian Language

2019 is UNESCO’s International Year of Indigenous Languages. In Estonia, as well as in Canada at the Museum of Estonians Abroad, VEMU, the Year of Estonian Language was celebrated.

Driven away from the Homeland – a Review of the Book Songbirds Swept away in the Wind by Lidija Mednis

That January was exceedingly hot – the hottest in 50 years. Lidija Mednis, a Latvian woman, had arrived in Australia in January 1951 after a long and tiring trip from Germany, where she and her husband had lived in a refugee camp after the war.
