The Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania has added the day dedicated to Lithuanian schools operating abroad to the list of memorable days. From now on, Lithuanian School Abroad Day will be celebrated on 10 August.
According to Dalia Asanavičiūtė, a member of the Lithuanian Parliament, this initiative gives meaning to the mission of Lithuanian schools abroad—to build and protect the Lithuanian identity in the world’s Lithuanian communities, to educate a responsible, active young generation of Lithuanians in emigration. Asanavičiūtė also notes that in many countries the Lithuanian school is a focal point of the Lithuanian community.
August 10th was chosen to celebrate Lithuanian School Abroad Day, because on that day in 2012, the World Lithuanian Community adopted the resolution on transfer of coordination of non-formal education of Lithuanians living abroad to the Ministry of Education and Science. According to the register of educational and scientific institutions, there are currently more than 240 Lithuanian education institutions operating abroad, with about 11,000 students and 1,200 teachers.
