On Monday, August 28th at 7pm, literary scholar Sirje Kiin gave a lecture from the MÜ (Forest University) Lecture Series on the topic of Siuru 100, to celebrate the anniversary of the famous Estonian literary group.

We received sad news in the heart of summer: after a serious illness Anne Valmas has left us. She was a founding member of the Baltic Heritage Network, member of the Archives of Estonians Abroad Working Group, a good friend, and a smart and energetic worker.

On Monday, August 14th, 2017 Maarja Hollo from the Estonian Literary Museum gave a lecture on the topic of Trauma, Memory, and Confession in Bernard Kangro’s Poetry. Maarja opened the 2017/2018 lecture season at VEMU.

Throughout the summer and fall of 2017, Canada’s capital city Ottawa, is hosting a special event, “Ottawa Welcomes the World” to highlight Canada’s diversity. More than 42 embassies were invited to showcase their county’s food, cultural traditions and music.

In 2017, the circle of preservers of the heritage of Estonians abroad celebrated 10 years since their first summer meeting. The meeting spot from June 26th – 29th was the same as the first meeting in 2007 at the Võru county Koke Guesthouse.

VEMU had a very eventful and busy spring season.

On Sunday, June 11th VEMU, Metsaülikool (Forest University), and EstDocs participated in the 21st Annex Family Festival in Toronto.

On Wednesday, June 7th the Estonian Studies Centre/VEMU and the Estonian Central Council in Canada hosted a reception at Tartu College in honour of the Republic of Estonia’s Minister of Culture Indrek Saar, to which all Toronto Estonians were invited.

Registration is open until June 12th for the BaltHerNet 7th summer school, which takes place from June 26th-29th in Tartu and Võrumaa at the Koke Tourism Resort.

The 2018 AABS Conference at Stanford University will celebrate two important milestones – the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) and the 100th anniversary of independence for the Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
