We have reached a milestone – the seminar on Valentine’s Day (the 14th of February 2012) was our tenth. The seminar, which featured two travel reports, two speeches and two presentations,took place on the third floor at the Academic Library of Tallinn University and was attended by 17 people.

During the discussions at the second Compatriots programme conference we established that gathering archive material related to the Estonian diaspora in the East is a difficult task. The Estonians in the East don’t have all that many cultural societies, and when they do, the society often doesn’t have its own premises. In order to help improve the situation we formed the working group for the diaspora in the East.

We now welcome presentations for the Baltic Heritage Network conference Hidden Treasures, which will take place on the 26th-28th of June 2012 at the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu (Vanemuise 42).

My name is Katre Viilvere. I’m 25 years old and I’m from Estonia but for the past five years I’ve been living in Germany, Hanover, where I’m earning my MA-degree in Atlantic Studies in History, Culture and Society at the moment. My studies are the reason why I’m in Toronto now: on the one hand, I’m doing an internship at the VEMU/Estonian Research Centre, and on the other hand, I’m doing a research for my MA-thesis on Canadian-born young Estonians.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) invites everybody, regardless of age, to participate in the competition: “My life in my new home country”. All real life stories, research and interviews about the lives of Estonians outside Estonia and the lives of foreigners in Estonia are welcome.

Five years ago, UNESCO established a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which is celebrated on October 27th,  in order to raise awareness of the importance of preserving audiovisual history in its various forms – audio, photography and film.

On the initiative of Tartu College’s Estonian Studies Centre (Chief Archivist Piret Noorhani), Toronto’s Estonians got to learn about Siberian Estonians during a week in September.

The Central and East European Studies (CEES) at the University of Glasgow are pleased to announce a second international student symposium on Estonian society, history and culture. The first international student symposium was held in 2008 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Estonian Republic and was very successful.
