The challenge? To create a film or video that conveys the importance of preserving the world’s moving image heritage. The Association of Moving Image Archivists’ first short film/video competition will highlight the importance of preserving our moving image heritage. Increasingly, our cultures are reflected through moving images – as news, entertainment, and historical artifact.

Co-operation between the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) in Minneapolis, USA, the Estonian National Archives and the Baltic Heritage Network began at the Baltic Heritage Network summer school in 2008 where the Director of the IHRC, Ms. Elizabeth Haven Hawley, participated.

The Immigration History Research Centre offers Grants In Aid awards to assist graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, independent and other scholars traveling to conduct research for a specified residency at the IHRC. The deadline for applications for 2010-2011 awards is June 1, 2010.

The annual conference of the Baltic Audioviusal Archival Council “Back to analogue: preserving audiovisual resources for digitisation and posterity” takes place this year in Riga, Latvia, October 4-6, 2010. We are returning to the birthplace of the original “Riga Seminar”.

The 24th International Baltic Conference on the History of Science is the first meeting of Baltic historians of science that takes place in Tallinn and the first hosted by Tallinn University of Technology. The conference will take place in the new building of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Tallinn School of Economics and Business Administration on the main campus of Tallinn University of Technology at Mustamäe.

The Estonian Institute offers scholarships to holders of a doctoral degree or Master’s or Doctoral students who are citizens of a foreign state and are studying at a university abroad, to write a research paper on an Estonia-related topic or to gather material for it.

Deadline for receipt of applications is March 1, 2010 with a decision to be made by April 15.

A second Baltic Heritage Network seminar for young diaspora researchers was held in Tallinn on the 21st of January. The seminar was attended by students from the universities of Tallinn, Tartu and Helsinki as well as staff from different Estonian memory institutions.

The production of “Alberta’s Estonians” DVD and “Alberta’s Estonian Heritage” website (www.albertasource.ca/abestonians) has resulted in an impressive collection of historical materials about Alberta’s Estonian community during the past 110 years. At a recent meeting of the AEHS Board, it was decided to donate all suitable materials-photos, historical documents, accounts of Estonian pioneer families, maps and rare books to the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) in Edmonton.

A sizable collection of vinyl records donated by the Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto—a total of around 200 LPs—went on display Dec. 16 in the Latvian National Library in Rīga.
