„The one who evolves, endures.“ J. Rainis BAAC annual conference (known already as Riga Seminar) this year takes place September 24-27 2008 in Tartu, the historical university town in the southern Estonia. The conference will be hosted by the Estonian Literary Museum and the Estonian National Museum.

Samara became the first Estonian and Livonian emigrants’ land of heart’s desire where easy labour and bountiful yields were reportedly awaiting. In the second half of the 19th century several Estonian settlements were established in the region. At the beginning of the 21st century Anu Korb and Tiit Joala travelled on the trail of the Estonian settlers.

A new non-profit association Baltic Heritage Network was founded at the BaltHerNet Baltic Seminar in Tartu at Estonian National Museum on January 10-11, 2008. The seminar was organized by the Expert Team on the Estonian Archives Abroad (in cooperation with Estonian National Museum and Karl Ristikivi Society) and sponsored by the Compatriot Programme (Estonian Ministry of Education and Research). All three Baltic states were represented with 22 registered participants from 17 institutions.

The Compatriot Program Conference, organized by the Ministry of Education and Research, was held in the National Library in Tallinn on 12-13 November. The conference gave an overview of the previous activities of the Program and discussed the main standpoints of the new program. The participants came from 12 countries.

The summer school on Estonian cultural heritage abroad was held at Koke, Võru County, August 21-25, 2007. The summer school was organized by the working group of the Estonian archives abroad and the Karl Ristikivi Society.

On November 30, 2007, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip visited Stanford University, where he gave a speech on the Estonian economy to an audience at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace. During his time at Stanford, the prime minister was given a presentation on Estonian history as reflected in the collections of the Hoover Institution Library and Archives.

Under the supervision of the expert team on the Estonian Archives Abroad there are being compiled the Baltic Heritage Network (www.balther.net).
